I recently saw the “Downloading Movies Is Theft” Propaganda at the Cinemas
and the problem I have with this is that if piracy is “Theft” as they claim it
is then why is it not treated as theft?
“fines of up to $60,500 for individuals and up to $302,500 for
corporations for each infringement and/or up to 5 years imprisonment.”
These are the penalties they claim on their own site but the penalty for
shoplifting is a slap on the wrist, I’ve never seen ANY shoplifter go to
Jail for 5 Years or face a $60 Thousand dollar fine for Theft So why should piracy be any different? It is after all the same crime according to the studios.
It is my opinion that Piracy is NOT theft and they are lying through their
back teeth to get the courts on their side as they try to impose absurd
penalties.
When someone downloads a movie they do not take any tangible object from
the studio opposed to theft where the victim loses an object and no longer
has that object in there possession as a result.
So why is the penalty for Piracy so harsh when it is a lesser crime?
I looked at Bigpond Movies yesterday $4.99-$6.00 per movie I’m happy to pay that for the convenience But the movie was 1.6GB I can get the same thing off ThePirateBay (Which I did) and its only 700MB same quality plus no 24hour viewing time or DRM.
If its going to take so long to download a movie (Especially as its twice the size it should be) I don’t want to just have it for 24hours I wont download it in the same day and time will be up before I get round to watching it I’m checking the site now and it requires me to install a special Media player, No thanks just give me the .avi and no bullshit DRM.
I have decided to stick with ThePirateBay for now not because they are free but because the overall product and service is superior to that which Bigpond offers.
(Update: 23 February 2008) I tried to contact Bigpond Movies “Sorry but the help service is currently unavailable due to a technical problem.”

This is something that really pisses me off when someone provides a video on their website which they didn’t create and places their name on the media.
Ebaumsworld.com is one of the worst offenders when it comes to taking credit for other peoples work. Almost everything on their site has the Ebaumsworld watermark even though they did not create the content that they are stealing credit for.
You may notice youtube.com doesn’t put their name on any videos that people upload unless you embed the video into an external site in which case they are entitled to be credited for the service they provide (Free Hosting/Bandwidth) BUT they don’t actually modify the video with a watermark to claim it as their own because that is plagiarism.
Don’t get me wrong I’m normally the first person to be breaking copyright laws but one thing I don’t do is claim other peoples work as my own.

PEOPLE who illegally download music would have their telephone and Internet services cut off under a radical new plan proposed by the music industry.
Fed up with falling sales, the industry - which claims Australians download more than one billion songs illegally each year - has been discussing tough new guidelines with Internet service providers (ISPs) since late last year.

How many Blacksmiths do you see around these days?
I can tell you there is a good reason for that answer.
The collapse of the music industry will not mean no more music we have had music for thousands of years and there are people making better music in their garage than many of the stupid sluts and self important assholes being turned out by record labels today.
Look how long music has been a part of human society then look how long these vultures have existed.
We will get along fine without the music industry I believe we will get better quality music as a result of its collapse because we won’t be dictated to by some big executive more people will explore and find the GOOD music.
Forget MTV and think of the local bands we have in Perth who play at local venues there will be no shortage of music and if more people are involved with the local bands it creates a better social setting for the music scene.
